MOL History

Rupa Kumar Kolli and David Stephenson started the MOL adventure after realizing that there are many scattered web pages on the monsoon but no single place where you can find it all. This motivated the two, who were working together that time at the French National Weather Service on a EU Monsoon Project, to set up a thematic website in 1997 on the Asian summer monsoon entitled Monsoon Online (MOL). They noted then that although there were many sites devoted to ENSO but there were no web sites where one could easily monitor the Asian monsoon.

The website was supported by Jayashree Revadekar at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and Emily Black at the University of Reading. Jayashree meticulously compiled the data and plotted the figures, during every summer monsoon.

After Rupa Kumar and David moved to new institutions (IITM and Univ. Reading), the website was shifted to the the IITM Pune web-server in 2010, and continued to be maintained by Jayashree. David Stephenson is now director of Exeter Climate Systems at the Univ. Exeter and Rupa Kumar Kolli is Chief of the World Climate Applications and Services Division at the World Meteorological Organisation.

Since June 2018, the website is maintained by Roxy Mathew Koll and Vineet Kumar Singh at IITM.
